Lightning Cluster Mapper-2 (LCM-2) superseded the Great Plains-1 Lightning Locator in July, 2005. These two systems were developed by Hampton W. Shirer in Lawrence, Kansas USA and Hampton N. Shirer in State College, Pennsylvania USA. Two LCM-2 systems currently operate in Lawrence, KS and in University Park, PA at Penn State University.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This site would not have been possible without the support of the Department of Meteorology at Penn State University and the contributions of the following Penn State staff and students:

Dick Thompson, Tom Treaster, and Paul Sharum helped with the installation of the original GP-1 system on Walker Building at Penn State
Bob Ziegler helped with the installation of the new LCM-2 system on Walker Building
Dennis Lamb has provided a great deal of helpful advice and encouragement during the development of both systems
Paul Torpey designed the original GP-1 web site that preceded this site
David Mazeroski wrote the plotting software for the live imagery from the GP-1 (no longer displayed)
John Skrypek added the Live Imagery page and designed both the opening graphic and the link buttons on the original GP-1 page
Tommy Owens and John Skrypek wrote the automated calibration data archiving procedure used for the GP-1
Ben Root incorporated the equidistant azimuthal map projection for the LCM-2 display using the web sites
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/AzimuthalEquidistantProjection.html and http://williams.best.vwh.net/avform.htm
Ted Reeves identified key references that led to improvements in the plotting algorithm for the LCM-2
Other significant contributions to the plotting algoritm used by the LCM-2 were provided by Michele Fisher and Jessica Whitehead

Many thanks for all their help
